Upgrading Mumbai’s infrastructure
a. Initiated the Marine Drive Beautification Project (August 15, 2004)
b. His interventions on Urban Development in Parliament led to the creation of the Rs. 1 lakh crore Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission by the Central Government (November 2005), of which Mumbai and Maharashtra are the biggest beneficiaries
c. Secured a Rs. 1,200 crore special grant from the Union Government to fund the Brihanmumbai Storm Water Drainage (BRIMSTOWAD) project, which will refurbish Mumbai’s entire drainage system
d. Initiated the beautification of Gateway of India promenade
e. Pressed the Maharashtra Government to expedite the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Mumbai Metro and Trans-Harbor Sea Link
f. Initiated the refurbishment and beautification of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus
g. Pressed Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) to extend its network of piped natural gas to residential buildings in South Mumbai
h. Secured additional funds from the Union and State Governments for Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation as well as MUTP and MUIP road and rail components
i. Upgraded essential infrastructure in G.T. Hospital, J.J. Hospital and Cama Hospital with the support of various corporations as well as the Union Government. The hospitals cater to Mumbai’s economically weaker sections and always come to the need of Mumbaikars in the time of disasters
j. Secured additional funds from the Union Government for the Main Block of the All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mumbai. A major highlight of the New Main Block is the first of its kind Modular Operation Theatre, designed by the Central Design Bureau and the third in the city of Mumbai
k. Secured a Rs. 100 crore grant for Mumbai University from the Union Government. The research-related grant is being used to create a Centre for Nano-Science and Nano-Technology

Kicked off the debate on converting 600 acres of mill land into open spaces and affordable/public housing. Subsequently, mill land surrendered to the Government of Maharashtra is being used to build transit accommodations for residents of Greater Mumbai that live in dilapidated structures until such time that their residential buildings are repaired or reconstructed
Stressed the need for fire safety in order to regulate commercial and residential properties, leading to the enactment of a fire safety law in Maharashtra’s Vidhan Sabha
Secured a 9% Savings scheme for senior citizens (Union Budget 2004)
Pressed the BMC to initiate the beautification of Zaveri Bazaar in conjunction with the Bullion and Shopkeepers’ Association
Beautification and Renovation of Pedestrian Subway and Traffic Junction at Vasudev Balwant Phadke Chowk (Metro Cinema Chowk)
Computerization of 110 primary and secondary economically backward schools, across all linguistic mediums through SPARSH
Setup Audi-Visual (A/V) laboratories for several needy schools and colleges in South Mumbai using MPLADS funds. Wilson College, Chowpatty is one such beneficiary
Donated Ambulances and other emergency medical equipment from MPLADS fund to hospitals in South Mumbai
Established SIGMA (Stimulating Inspiration, Guidance and Mentorship Association) to connect industry with academia
